Weekly Workout Totals 05/04/2009-05/10/2009

I had a good, if depressing, weekend of training. The sun never did come out too much while I was out there, and I had a pile of emotions that wanted to be dealt with, I guess brought on by it being Mother's Day weekend. I thought I could train them away, but it's not working out that way. Maybe I train better when I'm miserable now. Who knows?

Anyway, yesterday I rode 4 hours in Fermilab in the crazy winds between 9AM and 1PM, and here is the wind profile
I had thought about doing 5 hours, but the wind, clouds and cool temperatures conspired to make me stop after 4. Although I was allowed to ride on the big Ring 3 times, so that was cool. When I started, I felt pretty trashed from all the running I'd done Monday-Friday, and so I rode pretty much easy. I was playing mind games about whether I'd try and run off the bike. I just didn't think I had it in me. But I made a deal with myself that I'd just do a couple of miles, and it was still cool when I finished riding, so I only took off the wind jacket and headed out. I was totally surprised I could run at all, albeit pretty slowly. I managed about 3 miles and considered it good enough. I was so tired that I didn't even want to stop at McDonald's, instead drinking my bottle of Endurox R4 on the drive home. Here I am at the end of the festival:

I had taken in so much caffeine while riding that sleeping (after copious amounts of painkiller) was fitful, but 3 Advil PM finally did the trick and I went down for 8.5 hours. When I awoke, I felt drugged still, and it sucked, and I started playing mental games about whether I would do any training (doing nothing would have been OK), a little bit, or what I was supposed to do. What I was supposed to do was get in 7 hours of biking for the week, meaning I should ride 3 hours. It was cool and cloudy again, and my emotional state was crap, but I suited up and decided to get on Clipless Fuck and just tool around the neighborhoods. Well while doing reconnaissance in an area where I used to do intervals but that has been under construction for over a year, I discovered the roads were almost fixed and actually pretty good (one more layer of blacktop is all that's needed). So I decided to circle around my 3-mile loop I think 5 times, and when I got home from that I had about 1:30 done, and knew I had to stop drinking the caffeine-laden Infinit if I wanted any semblance of sleep.

So I loaded another bottle with Gatorade, after swigging about 8 oz., and headed back out. A neighbor stopped by to chat, which was nice, and he asked where I was going to go, and I guess I decided I'd head east and see how I felt. Well, about 10 minutes into leg 2, I finally felt like I wasn't drugged anymore and in fact, felt like pushing it a bit, so I did. And then I decided I wanted to get in 50 miles on the MTB, you know, because I was going to hit 50 miles of running for the week. That was my logic at the time.

So I did, got to see a lot of nice spring bulb displays here and there, the air smelled nice from all the flowering trees and shrubs, and I even enjoyed a hill or three. On the way home, I got a crazy idea that I should drive to Greene Valley and run up and then down the huge hill (1 mile straight up basically) to finish out my 50 miles for the week. But once I stopped riding, I decided I could do that next week and I'd rather just run from home, so I got rid of the biking tights and put on shorts and decided I'd run 2 miles. I was really surprised that it didn't feel at all bad to run! This is what happens when you run 7 days in a row, I guess. I ran out east with the slight tailwind, and on the way back I picked it up just a little bit and negative split the hell out of the second mile. I was like where the fuck did that come from? All good, though, and here I am all finished:

Below are the numbers. I actually ended up running about :45 more for the week than planned. That is not something I typically do, but I turned into a mileage junkie this week and Monday-Thursday it just seemed like a good idea to run about 8 miles each day. I biked a teeny bit more than planned, too, but that's pretty normal, and I swam a little more than planned. Well all good, I guess, right? This coming week should end up about the same volume, only less running and more swimming and biking, and a lot of getting stuff ready for Triple T.

Into a Big Week

Monday was a much needed rest day. All I did was get a massage, and then it was early to bed.

Yesterday I awoke feeling still tired although I'd slept well. That is to be expected. Although I was going to technically just skip Monday's workouts, the little voice in my head said I could make it up throughout the week, so I thought I'd start the day with a short swim. The water was too warm for me, and I swam pretty damn slowly, but it still felt good, especially since I hadn't done any pushups or chinups right before!

The plan called for a 2-hour ride and :20 run, but I figured I'd run for :30 just to put a dent into the missed running from Monday. It wasn't even 60 when I started riding, so I used the helmet beanie, booties and wind gloves. I was a little chilled at first, but warmed up quickly. I rode straight into the east wind, and just kept going east in the big ring, standing on any hills. Somehow I managed to ride exactly 2 hours, and when I downloaded the data this morning, the entire ride was at 82.5% of FTP, which isn't bad considering I had a bit of a tailwind on the way back in and there was a lot of stop and go, as I was basically riding through residential neighborhoods. All good, though!

I made a quick change into running tights and headed back out into the wind. At first, I felt too warm and thought I should have left the long sleeved shirt at home, but once I went directly into the wind, I knew I was dressed just right. My hands never were warm. The run didn't suck too badly as I'd had caffeine on the bike, but I still felt it. I didn't run particularly fast, but my usual steady, and I was just glad to get it done.

Since I did such a long workout in the middle of the day, even though I had begun work pretty early, I still kept going until about 6:15, and I really wanted to make a dent in my strength training for the week, so I motivated and got about 1/2 hour of that done, then quickly walked to a friend's house down the street for my physical therapist duty.

This friend just had a hip replacement, and her husband is out of town, so she needs help putting on and taking off compression stockings on the affected leg, and I am happy to help out. Evening all I have to do is strip it off, and starting today in the morning, I will stop by and put it on for her. Her house is at the top of the hill from my house, and it's 1/4 mile there, so I figure I can get in a little extra running there and back, too!

After that, I came back home and stretched and finally ate dinner around 8PM, and I think I should have eaten more (but I did have my first Twinkie of the year!), but I was too tired to keep eating and wanted to read a little before going to sleep.

I woke up a little early today because I was hungry, but I should be able to do better on the whole scheduling thing as I should be done swimming by 7:30 and can start work then, and I only need to run for 1:15 in the middle of the day, so I can be finished working by 5:00, get my stretching done, go see my neighbor, eat at 7:15 or so, have time to read and get to sleep early. I may try and get some more strength training done today. Or not!

I am watching the weather (it continues to rain a lot here), and don't yet have firm weekend riding plans. I may drive to Galena to do a very hilly ride on Saturday, or if Sunday has better weather, then I'll head up to Dodgeville, WI and knock out maybe 100 miles which will be totally hilly. Funny thing is I'm not even sure I'm ready to ride 100 miles let alone 100 miles with 9,000 feet of climbing! But if I end up doing that, I will not do much on Saturday.

This is a hard week of training. I've done this before, but each time I do it, there is something different about it. I always wonder how I got it done before but then once I'm into it, I stop thinking. So all of this planning and scheduling and orchestrating and controlling is all designed to put me into a position where I can train and not think, and that is a most beautiful thing.

Weekly Workout Totals 04/20/2009-04/26/2009 and Finally Shelled!

I am, unless something changes significantly, taking an unscheduled rest day today. Who is the fucking bitch that wrote on my training plan today that I was supposed to do a 3500 yard swim and a :50 run? I swear I am going to fire my coach today!

Yesterday was another day that was supposed to be warm with a "chance" of rain. When you wake up and it's already raining, how does that translate to a chance? I was going to go do an organized ride that begins northwest of me, and I've done the ride many times before, but the radar didn't look to be improving, so I began thinking about Plan B.

I had wanted to ride for 4 hours, since Saturday was the shorter ride of only 3 (although originally my training plan had called for a 4-hour and 2-hour ride--see how I ignore my coach?). It looked like the rain should clear out by maybe 11AM, so I got to doing other things around the house, and kept checking on the radar. I was going to drive to Fermilab, and did not want to be on the trainer!

Well, it was drawing near to 11AM and still raining...what to do? I ended up putting LGL on the trainer and started into a warmup as if I were doing my shorter, harder Tuesday ride. I wanted to see what I had left in my legs after Saturday's rather hard riding. Apparently quite a bit! I checked the weather after 1/2 hour, and decided to keep going for another 1/2 hour, which turned into 1:15, at which point I loaded up the car and headed to Fermilab.

The roads were wet, but with the sun coming out and the temperature rising rapidly (I think it did make it to near 80), things would dry up in a hurry, but I still got some nice spray up my ass. The wind was out of the east when I started, and since I was heading generally west, it was great! But a little over halfway around my 16-mile loop, the wind switched to south, and it picked up in a big way. No worries, wind makes me work!

I approached my entrance to the Big Ring but was being stalked by security, so I rode past it, doubled back and got on, and was quickly spotted by 2 security cars, and I got booted off. Damn! I had really wanted to do 2 laps around it.

No worries, with the wind picking up I was getting plenty of high powered action riding right into it and figured I'd just need one more full loop to get to about 3.5 hours total (including the trainer time), which would be enough on the day. But I did struggle with my inner voice which kept saying, "Listen fuckhead you said you were going to do 4 hours and it's not like you don't have the time so why don't you keep riding?" Still, I rationalized that I was going to end up riding more than was on the training schedule, so it was all good.

When I finished, I wiped down LGL to get rid of worms, sand and road spray as best I could, wiped off my own face, and drove home. I unloaded the car, and now it was really nice out, so I decided to plant a few things that have been waiting to get into the ground for a few weeks--6 lilies (Casa Blanca--pure white orientals that are gorgeous assuming they still grow since I should have planted them weeks ago), 3 heliotropes and an Angel's Trumpet that I had forgotten I had ordered.

While I was at it and dirty and smelly, I figured I should start raking the back lawn again, which was necessary since my neighbors never raked their leaves last fall so I got the pleasure of their leaves blowing onto my lawn during the winter which was not really good for the grass, all the while they are out there grilling and listening to tunes and most likely boozing it up.

I raked for maybe 1/2 hour, and was feeling famished and needing a shower, so I finally went inside to clean up and grabbed a beer. I was just beginning to stretch when a friend dropped by and we had some eats and then went back outside to enjoy the weather and my neighbor's girlfriend came over to have a conversation with us. She was pretty well blitzed, and she began asking me to go work out with her. I'm like OK whatever just get up at 5AM and we'll get to it. Not likely...she needs to quit smoking, but says she used to run cross country. She asked us how to get her butt in shape to wear a bikini on an impending vacation and we are like DO HUNDREDS OF SQUATS! That was an entertaining conversation.

This morning I am tired, sore and needing some major rest, so after waking up late and skipping the swimming, I think I will follow suit and skip the run and just get a massage this afternoon. Four straight weeks of 18+ hours and I am pretty worked. This is my big biking week, so I'll kick it off tomorrow with a 2-hour ride and short brick run.

Here's what I got done last week:

Weekly Workout Totals 08/04/2008-08/10/2008, Sunday Ride and General Rambling

First, I back up to last Wednesday. After my little bonk episode, I did eat a big bowl of pasta and a "normal" (as of late, anyway) dinner of lean protein and vegetables. Thursday morning I wake up and feel like crap. Bloated, gassy, crampy--my entire GI tract was in knots. So bad that I ended up calling in sick. I spent many hours curled up in the fetal position hoping it would subside. Was it the extra dose of carbs that I wasn't used to? Who knows. All I know is I felt like shit. But I needed to do a long run. I wasn't dying...I was just uncomfortable. So around 1:15, I went to Waterfall Glen and did it. It wasn't pretty--it was one of the slowest runs I've done in years--almost 10mpm. But it was an absolutely beautiful day, so I toughed it out. Since my stomach was a mess, of course, I barely ate anything before I started, so by the time I got comfortable running, then I had little fuel to draw on and my legs just plain hurt! It made me laugh that I was swapping one type of pain for another.

On Friday morning, I felt a little better--enough to be able to work, but still not great. I went to the outdoor pool and knocked out 3100 meters. It felt good to stretch out my midsection, but it didn't fix anything. I decided to do a ride in the middle of the day so I could be lazy on Saturday, and I headed out on CF to Greene Valley (a dump with accompanying trail system--it's actually pretty nice), and rode around in bright sunshine. I enjoyed the ride, even when my stomach would cramp up on me and try and bring me down.

Saturday morning I got to sleep in, and I didn't feel like doing much of anything, so I turned on the Olympics. I just got into it, and it was a really cool day, and I had wanted to go swim outdoors, but it rained a little and I decided I really didn't need to anyway, so I just vegged out. Ever have one of those days where you get really lazy and can't imagine getting excited about a big workout the next day? Saturday was one of those days for me. I just went into this mode of "I can't believe I work out so much when this laziness feels so good." I felt like my body was conspiring to shut me down anyway, so I let my brain indulge this fantasy for the better part of the day, all the while thinking I needed to fix some bottles, stretch and do a whole lot of other things, none of which seemed more appealing than parking my butt in front of the TV.

Finally, at about 2:30, I decided I had better do something because even though the laziness felt good, it didn't feel right. So I did an abs/core workout, and that got my blood flowing, and got me thinking about riding on Sunday. I decided that with my stomach still in knots that aero position probably wouldn't feel too good, so I lovingly carressed LGL to let her know she was going to get to go long on Sunday.

Of course, I had to stay up (anything past 9PM is late for me) and watch Phelps swim his 400IM, and that was awesome. I set my alarm for 4:30AM and fell asleep quickly. Upon waking yesterday morning, it was quite cool outside, so I had some time to obsess about what to wear. The forecast called for a high of 75, so I knew bike shorts were in order and maybe even a jersey. I felt better than the day before, but not overly excited about riding. Given all the training and racing I'd already done for the year, I knew that in the big scheme of things, if I really didn't feel like riding 100 miles that I didn't need to, but that was still my objective for the day.

I drove to Dekalb (home of Northern Illinois University, home of the Huskies) for the Windy 60. The ride had 20, 40 and 60-mile route options, so I figured I'd combine the 60 and 40. When I got the route map, though, it looked like there was an inner loop that I could just repeat, and now that I think of it, I'd done that before a few years back. I ended up leaving on my sleeveless tank and putting a bike jersey over it plus arm warmers, as it was still only maybe 56 when we started.

I had brought a can of Coke along for the ride in case I wanted it before I started, but I never did open it. I left it in the cup holder next to the driver's seat of my car. A few miles into the ride, I remembered I left it there and thought it might explode, but I didn't really worry too much about it. I had made a 6-hour bottle of Infinit for my nutrition, which was good, because on this ride they don't have Gatorade--they just have lemonade--and I am just not into carrying all the salt tablets with me anymore.

Odd for August (or summer, for that matter), the winds were out of the north. And our route took us, guess what? About 25 miles south to begin with. Nice! The tailwind was great, but considering there was little chance of the wind changing direction today, I knew the ride back would suck. About 20 miles in, you get to the main rest stop, and then you do a 21-mile loop and come back to the same spot, and then it's about 20 miles back to the start. The first time through the loop is when I got to experience the north wind. It sucked! Not only that, but the road we took north featured very long uphill grades, so that was really nice!

I finished the first loop and thought about whether I wanted to do it again. I could just stop and do a 60-mile ride, but there was this little voice in my head that was telling me it was no big deal and that I can suffer. Besides, the north leg only lasted about 20 minutes (of hell) or so. On loop 2, of course the wind picked up and it was even harder. It was funny that I was recognizing things, like a certain empty bottle of water tossed to the side of the road, an empty (or so I thought) bag from some sort of chips, corner dog (there was a dog at a right-hand turn and that's what I named him) and a whole lot of corn. Oh well, the ride south was fun!

I checked with the folks at the aid station (which I didn't really need because there was a water fountain) to see how long they'd be there and to let them know I was heading out for one more loop. I spoke with the woman heading the station and she noticed my Ironman Canada jersey and asked me how many I'd done, and I told her and that I was doing a self-supported one in a few weeks. I wasn't even very animated while talking to her, because, well, it's just stuff I do, but her eyes and her daughter's eyes went pretty wide when I told them about NothingMan. I really enjoy seeing the look on people's faces--I guess because I want them to see in me how much I love doing this that I would just "go do it" even though I do "regular" Ironman races, too.

That little voice was playing with me about now. I could just head back and call it 80 or so miles and that would be a good ride, especially with the amount of wind. But hey--I drove 46 miles to get there, so how stupid would it be for me to ride less distance than I drove? Pretty stupid. At least if you have a little voice in your head that's telling you to get back out there and suffer some more in the wind. So I went back out. I hadn't seen too many riders on the previous lap, but anyone I could see ahead of me I was able to catch. On this last lap, I didn't expect to see anyone, but sure enough, when I hit the north leg into the headwind, I saw first a solo rider, whom I caught, and then a group of three. The group of 3 looked like maybe they were players, but I guess not since I caught and passed them. Some people just give up into a headwind, and I was hurting big time, but not giving up. I knew it wasn't long into the wind, so I just kept pressing on.

Getting back to the rest stop for the last time, I pulled in first and was by myself. The group of 3 followed shortly thereafter, and when it seemed like we were all ready to go home, I asked them to come along and we could ride a pace line to make it easier. They looked at me like I was nuts, and maybe they thought I was too fast for them or else a little brash? But hey, I meant it, but they didn't follow right behind me.

At this point now, we had about 15 miles north to go. It was miserable. At one point we were on a road that was a long uphill grade of maybe 4 miles, into the headwind, and the pavement was grooved! My legs were screaming at me, and all I could think was hey--it may as well be raining, too! I was happy when I could get up to 15mph on this stretch. I did encounter one guy up ahead who eluded me for about 4 miles, but finally I caught up to him, and I could tell he was really suffering. We came up to this little nothing of a rest stop (which I hadn't expected), and someone flagged me down and said they had water. Well, I could have kept going, but the thought of cold water sounded great, so I stopped, dismounted, and grabbed some. One guy remarked that I didn't fall off my bike like other riders had. I was still hanging in there, and they said we had 8 miles left, mostly north. I thanked them for being out there and forged onwards.

At least the grooved pavement stopped, and it wasn't so much uphill anymore, so I was thankful for that. I wasn't looking at where I was at mileage-wise, because I just didn't care. I knew I'd be over 100 miles, and that was good. When I was almost back, I came upon a family of 4--Dad had an extension on his bike for his son, and Mom and a daughter were on their own bikes. I asked Dad how many miles they had done and he said 40. I was totally impressed! I told them all good job, and Dad asked me where I was at, and that's when I looked at the Ergomo and saw 107 miles. When all was said and done, I had 108.5 miles and was one happy camper to be finished.

I rode into the parking lot and proceeded right to get my t-shirt. Normally, I don't want shirts from rides, since I do so many of these, but this one I wanted. A man who I'd seen at various points asked me about my mileage and I told him and he said he wished he could give me a prize or something! All I wanted, though, was the shirt.

When I got back to my car, guess what? The can of Coke had exploded, but it wasn't as bad as it could have been. Luckily, I always bring a frozen washcloth to these long rides that I drive to, which by now was perfect for wiping up the Coke, but not until I wiped off my face. I was able to pretty much clean it all up, and just chalked it up to another minor obstacle in my day. I had brought along frozen Endurox, too, and it was ice cold. Now I wondered if I could make the entire drive home without going hypoglycemic.

Luckily, traffic wasn't bad at all, so I cruised home, and even was able to stop at the grocery store for a few things before going home. Although while at the grocery store I could tell I was on the verge of hypoglycemia, all I was craving was protein. And Olympics! As soon as I got in the door, I started eating and cracked a beer, and remembered I needed to mow the front lawn (I had done the back on Friday), and figured I should do that before I shower, so I did, and then I had the BEST SHOWER EVER and finally I could just lay around and watch the Olympics. I made myself stretch, which felt good, and while doing so, thought either I rode pretty hard or I suck!

That was one of the toughest rides I've done because of the wind, but also because my mental state wasn't in it initially. Pretty typical for 3 weeks after an Ironman race! There were points during the day when I thought I pretty much sucked, but when I realized what I was doing and the fact that there was no option but for me to keep riding loops into the wind, I thought, hey, I guess that shows some mental toughness, right? When I downloaded the ride information, well, I did ride pretty hard because I averaged 80% of FTP on the day. Wind makes me work!

This is when it's "fun" to me. When I feel like I'm struggling a bit because I've been pouring it on for months, and I'm starting to ask myself why do I keep going and think maybe I suck, but I know I don't and someone tells me I'm nuts, and in a way I am, and it's a good thing. This is the whole NothingMan thing--to want to do it, but not want to do it--to want to stop training, but to keep going anyway--to think it will be fun but realize that it's pretty sick to think of an Ironman as fun--to feel like everything and nothing all at once--to care and not care--to want to tell everyone about it but also to keep silent--to act like it's a big deal but it really isn't. And the whole objective of the exercise really is nothing, so here again is my favorite quote:

To achieve satisfaction
in everything
Desire it in nothing.
To possess everything,
Desire to have nothing.
To be everything,
Desire to be nothing.
To know everything,
Desire to know nothing.

Yesterday's Ride and I Had One of "The Dreams"

I got EIGHT HOURS of sleep last night!!!! See, I was so exhausted and sore yesterday, I figured I'd sleep well, and I did. Even though I woke up at 12:30AM to a lot of lightning and thunder, I fell back asleep pretty quickly as it was a quickly passing storm.

Yesterday I was planning on driving north to do this ride called BCLC Ramble. I enjoyed it so much last year that I thought I'd repeat. But when I looked at the weather forecast, it called for a higher chance of rain up there (pretty much due north) than by me, and then I thought how nice to not spend 3 hours driving, so I bagged it and decided to ride to Fermilab from home.

My legs were fucking tired at the get go. But I thought that with a nice 1 hour warmup they should come around. They never really did. About 2 hours in, I started having the thoughts of gee I could just bag this--if I only rode 4 hours it would be enough. But then that little HTFU guy was sitting on the other shoulder telling me that I needed for this to be a huge training week. So I pressed on, even though I wasn't riding particularly well.

And then the winds really picked up. I mean REALLY PICKED UP! Look at the graph below and notice what starts happening around 9:30AM:

On Saturday, the winds were around 15MPH, which is still pretty good wind for working hard (and I did), but when this shit started, I was like OMG! When I was riding east, the cross winds didn't bother me, but riding west or south were crazy! Since I wasn't feeling too great anyway, at first I didn't acknowledge that it was the wind causing me to suck so much, but as I came on other riders, I'd ask if it was worse than yesterday, and they said hell yeah!

I pressed on, planning on doing 4 loops, which would give me 94 miles. When I was midway through the last loop, the sky began to look a little menacing, but it looked like it was to the north. Still, we've been stuck in this thunderstorm factory for about a week now, and I decided that with all the wind, even if I didn't do a full loop I'd still get in plenty of riding.

As I continued around now, I cut out 2 east-west sections, as I just couldn't face riding west into the headwinds anymore. As I neared my exit, the clouds began gathering above me now, so it was time to hammer the hell home.

It's been a few years since I've done rain sprints, and good thing I hadn't been riding too hard because I had plenty of giddy up in my legs once I got through the 1/2 mile south leg before I turned east.

And when I turned east, it was all good. I just put the hammer down because now I was trying to beat a storm. At one stoplight, I was next to a car and a little girl was smiling at me. Dad rolled down the window and told me she had said, "That boy is going really fast." Well, from the back, it's hard to tell. I took it as a compliment because I was riding really fast. They did, however, notice that I am a girl, and I said to the little doll, "See? Girls can ride really fast, too!" She smiled, the light changed, and off we went again. More hammering.

About 7 miles from home, 3 roadies (not FRP's) came up on me at a stoplight, and we chatted about the wind, etc. I asked them how much riding they'd done and they were at about 80 miles. One of them looked at my Ergomo and saw the time on there and said, "Oh, looks like you've been out for awhile, too." Yep. So I latched onto their wheels for about 3 miles, one of them split off, and I stayed with the other 2 for about another mile.

Then it started raining. I'm 3 miles from home now, and the rain is coming a little hard. I made an executive decision to duck into a parking garage, and it was a wise move. Then the deluge began. Rain dumping down going every which way, but I was all safe and snug in my parking garage. I even did a few laps in there! The clouds looked to be moving fast, so I knew I wouldn't have to wait very long. I didn't time it (I no longer wear a watch while on the bike; the Ergomo has a clock, but I don't bother making intervals), but I figure it lasted 20 minutes? Thing is now when I have to wait like this I'm pretty relaxed. Actually I was glad for the break, but I wasn't too happy about riding on soaked roads, but what are you going to do? I figured I had to make a fast break because there would probably be more rain coming.

I made it home pretty filthy from all the road spray, and I took everything off Bitchie and wheeled her into the garage to clean her off a bit (full cleaning sometime today).

When I showered, there were bugs all over me as well as some nice road grime, and then bike grime since I'd wiped down my rims and that stuff got all over my hands. As always, though, it was the best shower ever, and then I made myself a big plate of nachos, and decided I wasn't into the Endurox R4. I mean, how can you drink that with nachos? So I cracked a beer, and it tasted, well, great.

I noticed pretty quickly than in stopping exercising that my legs were pretty fucked up, and that I would need to lay down. I checked the TV listings (no, still don't have cable; I barely watch TV anymore as it is), and saw that Jackie Brown was on. But on network, meaning they would need to censor pretty much every line. Still, I wanted to make it without passing out to the scene where Louis shoots Melanie. Below is a funny scene and then a summary of the movie with all the shit that got censored from the movie.

And I pretty much laid around and then stretched and then passed out for good. When I woke up this morning, I had just had a dream that I was doing IMLP and I had just got my bike to go ride. My legs felt bad, I couldn't pedal, and then I look down and notice my power meter is gone as are my aerobars! In the dream I then stopped and was sobbing uncontrollably. And then I woke up.

Weekly Workout Totals 06/02/2008-06/08/2008
This week's totals are sponsored by the WIND. There was so much of it this weekend that I have to hold it accountable for my extreme tiredness.

Harden the Fuck Up, Bitch

I needed to do a 4-hour and a 2-hour ride this weekend. As the week progressed, the weekend weather forecast got worse and worse, but by Thursday, it appeared Saturday would be the better day for the longer ride.

A friend of mine, Fred (pictured above with his amazing generic bike), agreed to ride with me starting at my house and to Fermilab, around a few times and back. Initially, we thought we'd get 3 loops in.

When I got up this morning, it was only 38 and now the weather forecast was calling for a high of only 55, but not until afternoon. Of course this meant I went through several iterations of cycling wear choices, but what I ultimately decided on worked out perfectly.

I decided I'd ride Bitch today so I could carry 2 mixed bottles of Infinit plus a third bottle of water. This would be my first ride on her this year! I made 1/2 caffeinated, 1/2 regular, since I didn't think I'd need pure caffeine today. I was so happy I found "fun size" PayDay candy bars yesterday, and I stashed two of them in my jacket. You can see all the crap I was using/wearing except for the bottles in the first photo. The other photos are taken after we finished riding, which is why we both look a little peaked.

I told Fred to be at my house at 7:30AM, and we actually chatted on Yahoo early this morning, and I found out where he lives, and at first I thought it was like 4 miles from my house, but turns out it's 6. He rode to my house, and upon arrival, he commented on how hard the wind was blowing. I hadn't paid attention to this on WeatherBug--I just knew it was chilly.

Well, the winds were WNW when we started, and as we headed straight west, it was obvious it was going to be slow going. I'm guessing the winds were 25-30MPH most of the time, and then there were some nice crosswind gusts that just made me laugh.

It was great getting to Fermilab, because at least we would get occasional breaks from the wind while circling around. Looking at my Ergomo, I saw it took us 1:10 to go 15 miles, so I started thinking maybe 2 loops would be enough today. And I also hoped the winds stayed the same direction, which would mean a tasty tailwind on the way back.

Fred hadn't been all the way around Fermilab before, so I had to show him all the cool stuff, and I think he enjoyed the fact that there is no traffic in there and pretty nice roads. Fred's a very strong rider, and I always worry I hold guys back when I ride with them, so I hope he got a good ride in. He did ask if I needed to do my interval crap, and I said that with all the wind I'd be getting a plenty good workout.

About 20 miles in, I said to Fred, "This is a Harden the Fuck Up ride!" Neither of us complained about the wind--it was just there. After we finished up the two laps, the winds were still blowing now mostly westerly, meaning a fast trip back, and we both enjoyed the hell out of some nice stretches where we'd get up to the upper 30's in speed.

So there. My longest ride of 2008. My first ride on Bitch (and I even managed some time in the aerobars, although, ahem, my womanly parts aren't used to that position just yet), and I enjoyed the hell out of her, it was cold and windy, but most of all, it was fun to have someone else along for this ride, which could have otherwise been quite miserable! We didn't see many other cyclists at all today--maybe 6? Usually I'll see several pelotons on a weekend ride.

Since Fred said he like this video, and what the hell, so do I, here's to those of you who need to:
